Philadelphia’s Sustainable Development Plan
Philadelphia operates under an ambitious urban sustainable development plan called Greenworks Philadelphia. This plan aims to create a healthy, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly urban environment for its residents. It encompasses numerous areas, including clean energy, climate change resilience, access to quality food, and waste sorting and recycling.
The plan is designed to ensure that every resident benefits from its implementation. At the same time, it anticipates maximum involvement from all community members to achieve its ambitious targets.
Thanks to this plan, many initiatives in energy efficiency have already been realized, the state and environmental friendliness of public transportation have improved, and access to quality, healthy food has expanded.
Developing the Urban Ecosystem
The development and improvement of the city’s ecosystem are ongoing in many directions. A particularly well-known and successful program is called Green City, Clean Waters. This 25-year plan was developed and has been implemented by the city’s Water Department since 2011.
The initiative aims to reduce water pollution by developing specialized infrastructure, specifically rain gardens, green roofs, permeable pavements, and bioswales, which collect rainwater before it enters the sewer system. The city’s One Philly, United City Cleaning program was completed in 2024. Over ten city departments were involved in implementing this large-scale project. It focused on combating litter and illegal dumps, which had emerged in certain areas of the city and posed environmental threats. As a result of the project, the quality of life in these neighborhoods improved, more attractive public spaces were created, and environmental hazards from waste were reduced.
Of course, in large Philadelphia, there’s still plenty of room for environmental initiatives and further ecosystem development.
