Growing up in that house taught me more about marriage than anybody who ever sat me down to explain it. You did not make it look easy, which I am grateful for. You made it look possible. Happy anniversary, and thank you for the whole thing.

2
I have been trying to think of the one moment that sums the two of you up, and it is not a wedding photo or a vacation. It is the fall Dad was out of work and Mom went back to nights, and neither of you said a word about it to any of us. That is the marriage. Congratulations on another year of it, and I hope this one asks less.

3
This comes from the kid who spent two decades assuming every family runs on the same steady hum yours does. They do not. Most people are improvising and hoping nobody notices, and the two of you built something that holds weight. Do half of what you planned today and let somebody else drive. Happy anniversary.

4
Fifty years is the sort of number people repeat at parties, and the number is never the part that impresses me. It is the ordinary Tuesdays stacked up inside it. You made a house where everybody knew what to expect walking in, and that is rarer than any anniversary. Congratulations, and may the golden one go exactly the way you want it.

5
You have been married longer than I have been alive and you still text each other from two rooms apart, which the rest of us find ridiculous and reassuring at the same time. Happy anniversary from both of us, and put us down for the party.

2
Congratulations on another year. From the outside your marriage looks like a well-run operation, which the rest of us understand to mean one of you does the paperwork and the other is charming about it. We are lucky to live near you. Have a great anniversary, and let somebody else do the cooking — meaning us, next week.

3
Ten years, and in that time you have moved twice, changed jobs three times between you, and never once made anybody in this friend group choose a side. We are grateful to have been around for most of it.

4
There is a version of marriage that is two polite people sharing an address, and yours has never for a second looked like that one. Congratulations on another year, and thank you for dragging us along for the ride.

5
This goes to the couple who introduced half of this friend group to the other half and then acted like it was nothing. Whatever the two of you worked out early, the rest of us are still taking notes on. Have a wonderful anniversary, and go somewhere with no obligations attached to it.

The first year — paper

1
One year in, and the paper anniversary is a decent joke on both of you, because a first year really is that thin and that easy to tear. You got through the part where you learn how the other one loads a dishwasher and what they are like on no sleep. That is an accomplishment. Happy first anniversary — the next ones come out sturdier.

2
Congratulations on the first one. A year ago there were flowers on every surface and everybody in the family had an opinion about them, and now it is the two of you, a lease and a serious conversation about a couch. This part looks better from here. Wishing you a great day and a long run of them after it.

3
First years are mostly logistics: whose family for the holidays, whose coffee maker survives the merger, who is willing to call the landlord. You have sorted more of that in twelve months than some couples manage in three years. Take today completely off from all of it. Happy anniversary to you both.

4
A whole year married, and you still look at each other the way you did during the toasts, which more than one person at that reception privately had money on. Paper is the traditional first, so write something down and keep it somewhere safe — you will want to read it in twenty years. Congratulations.

5
One down. Whatever anybody told you about the first year being the hardest, ignore it: it is not the hardest, it is only the loudest. You were good to each other through twelve months that had plenty of chances to go the other way. Happy anniversary, and here is to the boring ones ahead.

Silver, golden and diamond — the milestone years

1
Twenty-five years is silver, and silver turns out to be right for it: the stuff takes real upkeep, and it looks better than new when somebody has been minding it. The two of you have been minding it. Congratulations, and may the next stretch ask a good deal less of you than the last one did.

2
Fifty years married. There is no clever way to write that, so here is the plain version — you have spent half a century choosing the same person, most days on purpose and some days on faith. That is the achievement and it does not need decorating. Happy golden anniversary, from everybody who has benefited from it.

3
A diamond anniversary means sixty years, and neither of you has ever made one of them look like an obligation. You have outlasted the houses, the jobs, most of the furniture and all of the advice. Congratulations to you both. We are glad to be at the table for this one.

4
Twenty-five years and you are still the two people who leave a party together and then talk the entire drive home about everybody who was at it. Silver suits you. Wishing you a wonderful day, and a next quarter-century with considerably more sitting down in it.

5
The milestone years take all the attention and the ordinary ones do all the work, which is worth saying out loud today. Still, fifty is fifty, and it deserves to be said in a room full of people who love you both. Congratulations on the golden anniversary, and thank you for showing us what the long version looks like.

From the whole family

1
This one comes from every last one of us — the kids, the grandkids, and the two dogs who have no idea what is happening today. Everybody signing it has been carried by the two of you at some point, usually without asking and usually without it being mentioned again. Happy anniversary. We are not good at saying this out loud, so it is going in writing.

2
From all of us: congratulations. You built the house that everybody ends up at, and in forty years neither of you has acted like that was a burden. Whatever the two of you want today, the family will arrange it and then argue about the details for a week. Have a wonderful anniversary.

3
This is from all four households at once. The grandkids are convinced you have always been exactly like this, and not one of them knows how much work went into making it look that way. The rest of us do. Enjoy the day, and let somebody else handle dinner for once.

4
We sat down to write one card together and immediately could not agree on a single sentence, which is itself a family trait the two of you are responsible for. What we did agree on: thank you, congratulations, and we love you both. Have a great anniversary and a quieter year.

5
This comes from the whole family, which now takes three cars and a shared calendar to assemble in one place. All of it started with the two of you and one very small wedding that half the people here have only seen in photographs. Congratulations, and thank you for the entire complicated thing.

What to write in the card

1
The printed part of this card says something about love and forever, so here is the part that is actually from me. The two of you are the reason I stopped believing a marriage is either luck or a performance. It is clearly work, and you have done it without making it look like a chore. Happy anniversary, and I mean the printed part too.

2
Cards get kept, so this one may as well earn its place in the drawer. What I want on the record is that the two of you stayed steady through a decade that gave nobody much reason to be. Congratulations on another year. Whatever the day looks like, I hope every hour of it belongs to you.

3
I bought this card in a hurry and then thought about what to put inside it for a week. Here it is: thank you for the standing invitation, the spare room nobody ever had to ask for, and the number of times a bad night at your kitchen table turned into a good one. Happy anniversary to you both.

4
There is a great deal of blank space in here and only one thing worth using it on. The two of you have been good to each other in plain view of everybody, for years, and that has quietly set the bar for a lot of us who were watching. Have a wonderful day, and congratulations.

5
Anniversary cards mostly say the same six things, so I am going to skip all six. You still take each other’s side in public and settle it privately afterward, which is the only piece of marriage advice anybody has ever needed. Congratulations, and here is to the next stretch.

A few words at the table

1
I will keep this short, because the food is out and nobody drove here for a speech. Everybody in this room has been on the receiving end of these two at some point — a spare bed, a ride at a bad hour, a phone call that ran much longer than it needed to. Forty years of that is what fills a room like this one. To the both of you.

2
Two sentences and then I sit down. What the two of you have is not luck and it is not chemistry, it is attendance: you have shown up for each other and for all of us, over and over, for twenty-five years running. Raise your glasses, please.

3
Before anybody’s plate gets cold, one word. If you ever want to know what a marriage is worth, count the people who cleared a whole weekend to be in the room for it. Look around you. Congratulations to you both, and thank you for having us all here.

4
I promised I would not make a speech, so this is not a speech, it is an announcement. Fifty years ago these two made a decision that half the people in this room owe their existence to. Somebody top up the glasses. To the golden anniversary.

5
Quickly, before the toasts get away from us. Every one of us has watched the two of you handle something genuinely hard and somehow make it look survivable, which is a gift nobody here ever had to ask for. Congratulations. To many more years of exactly this.

Questions and answers

You are writing to two people at once. Do you address the card to both of them or to the one you actually know?

To both, and the test is whether the message survives being read aloud by the one you know less well. The common failure is a card written to your friend with their spouse added at the end like a copied-in address. The fix is grammatical before it is emotional: write the two of you rather than you, and put the specific detail on the couple rather than on the person — what they do together, how the house feels, the thing everybody counts on them for. If you can find one true observation about the quieter half, spend it here. That is the line that gets remembered, because almost nobody bothers to make it.

Do you need to know the anniversary names — paper, silver, golden — to write a good message?

No, but the four everybody recognizes are worth having: paper for the first, silver for twenty-five, golden for fifty, diamond for sixty. Those carry real meaning and give a sentence something concrete to stand on. The long lists that assign a material to every single year are largely a retail invention, and different versions disagree with each other, so building a message around cotton or tin is a lot of effort for a reference the couple may not recognize. If you use one, use it once and make it do work — silver takes upkeep, paper tears — rather than simply announcing which year it is.

You were at the wedding. Does that belong in the message, or is it the obvious thing everybody writes?

It works exactly once, at the first anniversary, and after that the day itself carries less weight every year while the marriage carries more. The tell is what you reach for: if the memory is about the band, the weather or the reception, it is a memory of a party you attended rather than of two people. What survives is small and about them, ideally something they did not know you saw. Past about ten years, drop the wedding and write about the decade instead — a couple at their twenty-fifth has had that day described back to them twenty-four times already. If you were not there at all, say nothing about it.

It has been a visibly rough year for them. Does a warm anniversary message still fit?

It fits, provided you write to the two people and not to the institution. The dividing line is who told you. If one of them talked to you about it, a plain sentence acknowledging a hard year is welcome; if you only heard it secondhand, leave it out, because a knowing allusion tells them the year is being discussed by people they never confided in. Either way, drop the forecast: many more years and here is to the next fifty are predictions, and a prediction is the one thing nobody in a rough year can stand to read. Thank them for one specific thing they did for you, and wish them an easy day.

There is no party and they have never made a fuss about the date. Is a long written message too much?

A long message is easier to receive than a public one. A toast puts a couple on display in front of a room and requires a reaction on the spot; five sentences on paper get read privately, at their own speed, usually twice, and nobody has to perform anything. So the length is not the problem, the audience is. Hand it over, mail it, or send it in the morning, and attach no request to it. The one rule for couples who dislike a fuss is to keep the delivery quiet and to skip the phrase we should celebrate properly, which turns a nice note into an invitation they now have to decline.

An anniversary card is written to two people at once, and that is what makes it hard.
