Our chat has a bot that announces birthdays. Do you reply in the thread, or is that enough on its own?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nStart your own message rather than adding the fifteenth line under an automated post. A reply in the bot’s thread reads as compliance, because everybody can see the prompt that produced it, and the birthday person ends up thanking a column of near-identical sentences. A short direct message costs the same effort and lands as something you decided to do. The list those bots read from is opt-in and always incomplete, so somebody having no announcement is very often a choice rather than an oversight, and announcing it yourself to fix that is the one genuinely bad move available here. And the bot fires on a schedule, so it will cheerfully wish a happy birthday to somebody who is out of office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You manage the person. Does a birthday message from a boss read as feedback?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt does if you put performance in it. Praise from a manager is never received as neutral, and a line about how well somebody handled the last quarter turns a birthday into an unscheduled review they will spend the afternoon decoding. Keep the specifics on character rather than output: easy to work with, first to help. Leave out anything currently in play \u2014 a raise, a role that is opening, a project under review \u2014 because attaching it to a birthday makes it look like a hint. Then send comparable messages to everybody who reports to you, in the same place and at the same length. People compare, warmth from a manager gets read as a ranking, and the person you skipped is the one who remembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are having a rough time at work \u2014 under review, passed over, or on their way out. What do you write?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nNothing about any of it. A birthday message is the one thing arriving that day with no evaluation attached, and that is its value to somebody being evaluated everywhere else. Solidarity is the trap: hang in there, you deserve better, this place has no idea what it has \u2014 all of it is well meant, all of it turns a birthday note into a comment on their standing, and all of it can be forwarded. Write the plain version. One line that you are glad to work with them, one wish for the day, and nothing at all about the year ahead, since the year ahead is the thing in question. If you want to do more than that, do it on an ordinary Tuesday, where it cannot be read as a reaction to anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You do not especially get along. Do you still sign the card?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nSign it, keep it short and true, and do not perform. A blank space where your name should be on a card that went around the whole floor is louder than anything you could have written in it. Two neutral sentences with one real professional detail in them \u2014 fast on turnarounds, never missed a handoff \u2014 cost you nothing and close nothing off. The two failure modes are equally visible. A sudden effusive paragraph reads as sarcasm to somebody who knows precisely where you stand, and a bare signature with no words reads as a statement. Do not use the birthday to repair the relationship either: a card is too small to carry that, and the date makes the gesture look scheduled rather than meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Their birthday lands while they are out on PTO. Do you send it on the day or wait until they are back?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nSend it on the day and make it obviously no-reply. The date belongs to them whether or not they are working, and a message that says nothing about work costs nothing to read from a beach chair. What ruins it is any reference to what is piling up: one mention of the inbox is enough to put somebody back at their desk for the afternoon. The card everybody signed simply waits on the desk and gets handed over on the first day back, with no second ceremony. And if the birthday falls on the last day of their vacation, still send it that day rather than saving it for Monday \u2014 a birthday message dated three days late reads as an afterthought even when it is not one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
