out by the Olmsted Brothers on filled tidal marshland between the Schuylkill and the Delaware and opened as League Island Park before it took Franklin Delano Roosevelt&#8217;s name in 1955. It is a city park under Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, not National Park Service land, with the Fairmount Park Conservancy and Friends of FDR Park as its nonprofit partners. Come knowing one thing: this is the most heavily reconstructed major park in the United States right now. A 33-acre tidal wetland, a destination playground, a welcome center and a gateway plaza are finished; large areas, including the western edge where the golf course used to be, are fenced for construction; and the whole program runs to 2030.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Olmsted Brothers lagoon system<\/strong> \u2014 planned between 1914 and 1916 by the successor firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, a pond and a large lagoon ringed by open lawn and deciduous trees in the pastoral English manner, laid across ground that had been salt marsh.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The American Swedish Historical Museum<\/strong> \u2014 begun in 1926 for the Sesquicentennial International Exposition to a design by John Nyd\u00e9n, opened to the public in 1928 and formally inaugurated in 1938 for the three hundredth anniversary of the New Sweden colony; the oldest Swedish museum in the United States.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The 1914 gazebo and 1916 boathouse<\/strong> \u2014 survivors of the original Olmsted-era build, alongside six single-span bridges of 1914 with schist walls and segmental arches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bellaire Manor<\/strong> \u2014 the Samuel Preston house, built in the second quarter of the eighteenth century and once overlooking a working farm of about 142 acres, making it one of the oldest structures in South Philadelphia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Southeast Asian Market<\/strong> \u2014 begun by Cambodian, Lao, Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian refugees and immigrants in the 1980s and now running with dozens of vendors on weekends from spring into late autumn; the city has funded making it a permanent fixture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Anna C. Verna Playground<\/strong> \u2014 opened in October 2023 with birdhouse-themed structures that acknowledge the park&#8217;s bird habitat, and a swing set billed as one of the largest in North America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_inside\"><\/span>What&#8217;s inside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park is water first and land second. It sits barely above sea level on an estuary, it floods, and the current rebuild is essentially an argument about how to live with that rather than fight it. About 209 acres, sixty percent of the total, are designated as an ecological core.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lakes and lagoons<\/strong> \u2014 the Olmsted-era water bodies, including Edgewood Lake in the middle of the park and South Meadow Lake toward the southeast corner, still shaping every path alignment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A 33-acre tidal wetland<\/strong> \u2014 built in partnership with Philadelphia International Airport, broken ground in August 2022 and completed in spring 2025, planted with thousands of climate-resilient native trees and shrubs and engineered to take tidal flow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A smaller constructed wetland<\/strong> \u2014 about two and a half acres using hummock-and-hollow microtopography, a technique that multiplies habitat niches within a tiny footprint.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sports ground<\/strong> \u2014 tennis courts, soccer and multipurpose fields, a skate park and cricket pitches, with new basketball courts, a fitness area and a multipurpose field under construction in 2026.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Meadows<\/strong> \u2014 the former golf course land on the western side, closed after nearly eighty years of play in 2019, which naturalized on its own and became the emotional center of the debate about the park&#8217;s future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Picnic areas and paths<\/strong> \u2014 the numbered picnic groves are how everyone here navigates, and the market moves between them as the season changes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>What to do and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Birders<\/strong> \u2014 Audubon Pennsylvania designated the park an Important Bird Area, and the lagoons pull in northern shoveler, gadwall, American wigeon and other waterfowl on the Atlantic Flyway; nothing else this productive exists inside the city.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food travelers<\/strong> \u2014 the weekend Southeast Asian Market is one of the most acclaimed outdoor food markets in the country and the single best reason to plan a Saturday here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families<\/strong> \u2014 the 2023 playground was designed as a destination in its own right, and the gateway plaza that opened in July 2025 gives it a proper front door.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sports players<\/strong> \u2014 this is South Philadelphia&#8217;s field capacity, used hard by soccer, cricket, baseball and skateboarding communities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Landscape history readers<\/strong> \u2014 an Olmsted Brothers plan, a 1926 world&#8217;s fair remnant, a colonial farmhouse and a twenty-first-century wetland restoration sit on the same square mile.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anglers and walkers<\/strong> \u2014 the lagoon edges and the completed path segments give flat, easy walking with open water on both sides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_and_practicalities\"><\/span>Getting there and practicalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park occupies the far south of the city, immediately west of the stadium complex and north of the Navy Yard, with the airport close enough that planes are a constant overhead presence. NRG Station is the southern terminus of the Broad Street Line, signed as SEPTA Metro B, and puts you within a few minutes&#8217; walk of the park&#8217;s main entrance \u2014 the same station serves the sports arenas, so expect crowds on game days. There is no admission and no gate, and standard city park hours apply. The critical practicality in 2026 is construction: significant areas including the western former golf course side are closed to the public for safety, paths shift, and the market itself relocates within the park in July, moving from the southeast corner near South Meadow Lake to the middle of the park near Edgewood Lake for the rest of the season. Allow two hours for a lagoon loop and the museum exterior, and half a day if you come for the market on a weekend.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is when the park reopens for real: the market&#8217;s season starts in April, the wetland plantings green up, and migrating waterfowl are still using the lagoons before moving north. Summer is hot, flat and exposed, and the smart approach is early morning for birds and late afternoon for the market, with the new playground doing the heavy lifting for families in between. Autumn is the park&#8217;s best season by a distance \u2014 the market runs into November, the light across the lagoons is long and low, and the returning waterfowl put on a show that Audubon designation was made for. Winter strips the park back to its bones and is when you can actually see what the Olmsteds did: the lagoon outlines, the 1914 bridge arches in schist, the gazebo and the boathouse all legible without foliage, and duck numbers on the open water at their highest.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>League Island Park was created on marsh, and everything since has been a negotiation with water. The Olmsted Brothers, carrying on Frederick Law Olmsted&#8217;s practice, produced the plan between 1914 and 1916; the gazebo of 1914, the boathouse of 1916 and six schist-walled bridges of 1914 date from that first build. In 1926 the Sesquicentennial International Exposition marked one hundred and fifty years since the Declaration on and around this ground, and its most durable legacy is the American Swedish Historical Museum, designed by John Nyd\u00e9n in the manner of a seventeenth-century Swedish manor, opened to the public in 1928 and formally inaugurated in 1938 on the three hundredth anniversary of New Sweden. Older still is Bellaire Manor, the Samuel Preston house of the mid-eighteenth century, which once looked out over a farm of some 142 acres. The park took Roosevelt&#8217;s name in 1955. A golf course operated here for nearly eighty years and closed in 2019, and the ground it left, known locally as the Meadows, reverted toward wild marsh and became beloved precisely for being unmanaged. That is the fault line of the present. The FDR Park Plan, led by the Fairmount Park Conservancy with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, treats sea-level rise and chronic flooding as the design problem and reorganizes the park around an ecological core of about 209 acres. A 33-acre tidal wetland built with Philadelphia International Airport broke ground in August 2022 and was finished in spring 2025; the Anna C. Verna Playground opened in October 2023; a welcome center and a gateway plaza followed, the plaza opening in July 2025. Construction in 2026 covers basketball courts, a fitness area, a bike and walking path and a multipurpose field with stormwater infrastructure, with the western former golf course area closed off. The Nature Phase, restoring tidal wetland, nature trails, wildflower hills and a nature playground, has a major push beginning in 2026 with completion planned for 2028; the picnic and play program is scheduled to finish around 2030. It has not been consensual: a group of South Philadelphia residents sued to stop the renovation, a judge declined to halt the work, and the case has continued on appeal through 2026. The park was also considered and then passed over as a practice site for the 2026 men&#8217;s World Cup, which Philadelphia is co-hosting.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Check where the Southeast Asian Market is standing before you go. It sits in the southeast corner of the park in the early season and moves to the middle of the park from July onward.<\/li>\n<li>Check what is fenced. Construction closures move month to month, and the western side where the golf course used to be has been shut to the public for safety.<\/li>\n<li>Bring binoculars even if you are not a birder.
