Spruce Street Harbor Park is a seasonal installation at Penn&#8217;s Landing on the Delaware River, built fresh each year and taken down again at the end of the season, operated by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, the nonprofit created in 2009 to manage Philadelphia&#8217;s central waterfront. It opened for the first time in 2014, designed by Groundswell Design Group with Interface Studio and DIGSAU and backed by an ArtPlace America grant, on the premise that a stretch of forgotten harbor edge could be turned into a summer village overnight. It worked immediately \u2014 175,000 people came in 2015 alone \u2014 and it has returned every year since, opening in late May and running seven days a week, including holidays, through the warm months. Admission is free; you pay only for food and drink.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Highlights\"><\/span>Highlights<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Hammock Lounge<\/strong> \u2014 more than fifty oversized colored hammocks strung between the trees on the landward side, free and first-come first-served, and the single image that made the park famous.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Oasis barges<\/strong> \u2014 three moored barges holding a lily pad water garden, bright seating, a bar and a net lounge suspended out over the open river, so you sit above the water rather than beside it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The light canopy<\/strong> \u2014 thousands of LED bulbs strung through the tree cover, which turn the whole site into a colored lantern from dusk onward and are the reason the park reads completely differently at night.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The boardwalk<\/strong> \u2014 a raised timber walk along the marina basin with a deliberately seaside feel, lined with Adirondack chairs and picnic tables.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Games and free play<\/strong> \u2014 oversized Connect Four, board and lawn games scattered through the site, all free to pick up and use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Live programming<\/strong> \u2014 a Friday night jazz series, Latin nights of salsa and bachata, a summer concert series, DJ evenings, outdoor film screenings and a Saturday pop-up market of local artists and makers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_inside\"><\/span>What&#8217;s inside<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Everything is temporary by design \u2014 modular, movable, and reassembled each season \u2014 which is exactly what makes the place feel like an event rather than a landscape.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A cluster of local food vendors in kiosks and containers, changing composition from year to year rather than staying fixed.<\/li>\n<li>The Lazy Hammock bar with a large outdoor video wall that turns the lawn into a viewing area for matches and screenings.<\/li>\n<li>The Trading Post, selling Philadelphia-made ice cream, snacks and local merchandise.<\/li>\n<li>Shade structures, umbrellas and planting brought in seasonally, with maritime and industrial references drawn from the harbor&#8217;s own history.<\/li>\n<li>Restrooms, seating for large groups and level circulation throughout, with dogs on leashes welcome across the site.<\/li>\n<li>A direct link to the rest of the waterfront: the converted municipal pier that reopened in October 2018 as artist studios, a market hall and a garden over the water; the landscaped pier park designed by James Corner Field Operations and opened in 2011; the Delaware River Trail; the marina with its swan boats; and the seasonal riverside rink complex \u2014 all within a short walk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_and_who_its_for\"><\/span>What to do and who it&#8217;s for<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Couples and friends on a summer evening<\/strong> \u2014 this is the city&#8217;s default warm-weather hangout, best after sunset when the lights come on.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Families with children<\/strong> \u2014 free games, open lawn, hammocks and ice cream, with no admission barrier and nothing that has to be booked.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visitors with an afternoon to fill<\/strong> \u2014 it pairs naturally with the historic district, which is a short walk inland, so you can go from the eighteenth century to a hammock in fifteen minutes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Photographers<\/strong> \u2014 the light canopy over the barges at blue hour, with the illuminated suspension bridge upriver, is one of the reliably good shots in Philadelphia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Music and film audiences<\/strong> \u2014 the programming calendar is dense enough that most evenings have something scheduled and free to attend.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Anyone traveling with a dog<\/strong> \u2014 leashed dogs are welcome throughout, which is unusual for a site with this much food service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_there_and_practicalities\"><\/span>Getting there and practicalities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The park sits on the Delaware waterfront at Penn&#8217;s Landing, on the eastern edge of the historic district. SEPTA&#8217;s Market\u2013Frankford Line, signed as the L since the 2024 SEPTA Metro rebrand, runs to 2nd Street Station, from which the walk down to the river takes only a few minutes; PATCO trains from New Jersey stop at 8th and Market, and the seasonal RiverLink Ferry crosses from Camden. Entry is free and unticketed. The season conventionally opens in the second half of May \u2014 the 2026 season began on May 22 \u2014 and the park operates seven days a week including public holidays until it closes for the year in early autumn. Hammocks cannot be reserved and go on a first-come basis, which is why they fill by mid-afternoon on hot weekends. A discounted waterfront happy hour runs Sunday through Wednesday in the late afternoon. Allow an hour for a walk-through and a drink, an evening if you come for the music, and note that the site is level throughout and stroller-friendly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is a matter of waiting: the site is closed and dismantled through the cold months, and the opening in the second half of May is treated locally as the real start of summer. Summer is the whole point \u2014 long humid evenings, the light canopy switched on at dusk, live music several nights a week, and river breeze that makes the waterfront noticeably cooler than the streets inland. Early autumn brings the best conditions of the year and the fewest people: warm afternoons, cool evenings, hammocks actually available, and the last weeks of programming before the closing date. Winter here means the park does not exist at all \u2014 the barges and hammocks are removed and the site goes quiet, although the adjacent riverside rink switches from summer roller skating to winter ice and keeps the waterfront in use.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Worth_knowing\"><\/span>Worth knowing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Penn&#8217;s Landing carries a name that is more commemorative than literal. William Penn&#8217;s ship the Welcome reached the Delaware in late October 1682, but he came ashore first at New Castle and then at Upland, now Chester, downriver; the Philadelphia site was named to mark the founding rather than to record an exact landing. What this stretch of shore genuinely was, for two centuries, is a working port \u2014 piers, warehouses, shipyards, and the ferries that carried everything across to Camden until the great suspension bridge opened on July 1, 1926 to designs by Ralph Modjeski with the architect Paul Philippe Cret, at that moment the longest suspension span in the world. The port&#8217;s decline emptied the piers, and the elevated expressway driven through in the 1960s and 1970s sealed the old city off from its own river, which is the wound that every waterfront project since has been trying to close. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation was created in 2009 specifically to do that work, and Spruce Street Harbor Park was its most successful early experiment in what its designers called iterative placemaking \u2014 cheap, temporary, repeatable interventions that prove demand before permanent money is spent. The permanent answer is now under construction: an 11.5-acre park being built on a cap over the expressway trench, broken ground on September 6, 2023, roughly a third complete by the end of 2025, with the cap due around 2029 and the park itself landscaped afterward.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrive before mid-afternoon on a hot weekend if a hammock matters to you \u2014 they cannot be booked, and by four o&#8217;clock every one of them is occupied.<\/li>\n<li>Stay past sunset.
