However, few people know about the interesting history of the latter, namely, how they influenced the development of fishing in Philadelphia. In the current article, you can learn more about who was the first to start fishing here, the peculiarities and current state of fishing in the city. Read more at philadelphia.name.

The history of fishing in Philadelphia

In our settlement, fishing originated long before the mentioned place itself. It is known from historical sources that even before the colonization of these lands by Europeans, the indigenous Indian people lived here. They called themselves Delaware in honor of the river of the same name. They are remembered for building special engineering structures along the rivers to catch as many fish as possible, which came to mate in the Delaware in the spring.

The Indians watched the plants that began to bloom when there were many fish in the water, which signaled that it was time to go fishing. When they got the desired result, Delawareans liked to cook fish over a fire, and later this tradition was adopted by European colonizers.

During the outbreak of the War of Independence and the founding of a new state on these lands, fishing in the city was suspended on a large scale due to river pollution. Later, fishing resumed, and the subsequent period is known as the most stable in the history of fishing in Pennsylvania.

Thanks to the geography of our settlement, it is becoming one of those that Americans used to call fish towns. The latter annually visit Philadelphia to catch fish on the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. Especially in the Fishtown neighborhood, which was named after the successful activities of German-American fishing families who once lived there.

Features of fishing in the modern period

Nowadays, there are still fishermen in Philadelphia who follow old traditions and enjoy fishing in the city’s rivers, despite the significant decline in the population of aquatic creatures. Although, the main problem is not even the number of fish in the Delaware or the Schuylkill, but the search for a comfortable place to fish.

Another inconvenience is the lack of proper parking near the Fairmount Dam and the Art Museum. At the same time, if you do find a place for your car, you may face a robbery because the area is quite criminal. Because of this, many experienced fishermen park about a mile away and then ride their bikes to their spot.

The main fishing season in the City of Brotherly Love starts in February. At this time, there is a hunt for pike perch, as well as American perch, or as the locals say, the founder fish. The latter comes to the reservoirs, where local fishermen are waiting for it during the spawning season. If there are no heavy rains, the American bass will be on the hook of experienced Philadelphians.

Furthermore, there is a special law in the city on fishing in the state of Pennsylvania. It states that every local fisherman must adhere to special restrictions. They can take only two striped bass, measuring between twenty-one and twenty-four inches, every day during the last two months of spring.

The current rule protects large females during the breeding season to preserve the population of aquatic creatures. Outside the aforementioned dates, local fish hunters are allowed to keep one striped bass between twenty-eight and thirty-five inches in size. The fishing on local rivers and the law-abidingness of the Philadelphians are monitored by the region’s professional commission on relevant issues.

Nowadays, fishing is not very popular in Philadelphia at the level of professional sports, only amateur. However, there is one person whom the citizens are proud to call their countryman – it’s all about Joe Humphreys. The majestic fisherman was a multiple winner of competitions for catching weighty fish. The man started fishing in our city when he was only six years old. He brought his first catch home, and his mother cooked dinner for him, and that’s how the hunter’s journey began.

After completing his professional career, he published his own book called Trout Tactics, where he left the secrets of success in his current activity to the next generation of fishermen.

Many people in America and around the world speak about our city, in particular, because of its two great rivers, the Schuylkill and the Delaware.
