Who is Walter Isard?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Walter Isard was born in Philadelphia on April 19, 1919. He grew up in a family of emigrants from Europe, who raised little Walter with love and faith in God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the City of Brotherly Love, he received an education and graduated with honors. This helped him enter Harvard University. There, under the guidance of professors Alvin Hansen and Abbott Usher, the young man earned a doctorate in science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the world shuddered from another world war, he was called up to military service. However, he did not want to perform it and was suspended because of his religion. Later, he earned money for a living by working in a hospital for mentally ill people. At the same time, he found time for self-education. He was given books on the theories of product placement, which he translated from German into English. After the fall of the Nazis, the American returned to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the scientist remembered for?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At Harvard University, Isard taught the original course on the theory of regional economics. He also taught it at a number of other universities and colleges. His work became a real science, which even had followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isard’s regional science was a combination of the knowledge of economics and geography. In the second half of the twentieth century, a native of Philadelphia actively produced new works devoted to it. Books were distributed throughout America and he became a widely known scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the sixties, regional economics was the most popular branch of science. Then, there was a sharp decline in interest in American society. As a result, many of Isard’s followers renounced him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even Walter himself ceased to deal with regional economics, giving preference to a new science. It was world geography, which dealt with solving the problems of logistics of industry, trade and service sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American is remembered, in particular, for the brilliant phrase in one of his works. He stated that the population was primarily a consumer of industrial products, not a means of its production. Surprisingly, the last thesis cannot be found in the Soviet translation, due to strict censorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, in Isard’s world geography, more political and social life and even some philosophical issues appeared. Professor Walter’s next interest turned to a new scientific discipline. To develop it, he consolidates the best scientists into one community. It was named the Peace Research Society. There, intelligent people from all over the world discussed and sought answers to global issues, for example, how to prevent international and regional armed conflicts on our land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 6, 2010, Walter Isard died at home. He was buried in his native Philadelphia. A large number of people gathered at the wake, among whom twenty-two people were his relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wide number of his books remind us about the life of an outstanding scientist. In the monograph of a native of our city, we find such interesting works as Location and Space-economy, Methods of Regional Analysis, General Theory and Regional Input-output Study. In the last book, Walter Isard, with the help of Thomas Langford, investigated one of the districts of his native Philadelphia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
